:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Garrett Hutson -- Great story about finding your own path : This was a really compelling story about a 17-y.o. Chinese-American girl in 1954 San Francisco finding her own way in the face of strong family expectations, plus institutionalized racism, sexism, and homophobia. Lily Hu is such a relatable protagonist that her journey and struggles will resonate with many types of people--especially anyone who has fought to forge their own path, and live their own truth, contrary to what family or friends expect. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Berni -- Engaging coming-of-age story set in 1950s Chinatown : I was thinking about this book in relation to the last book I read. In the last book, the protagonist was a straight white woman. I did not connect with her, despite being a straight white woman myself. Lo is such a good author that I had no problem connecting with her heroine, a high school-aged Chinese girl in the 1950s who discovers she is a lesbian. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from K. Bird Lincoln -- sweet tale of a child of immigrant parents figuring out her own truth : 1950's San Francisco Chinatown is complicated enough for second generation Chinese teenagers, what with racism whenever they leave their safe neighborhoods, the Nationalists vs Communists entangling families in politics, and the ever present Red Scare excusing blatant police and enforcement inequities. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from April Adams -- I love everything about this beautiful story!!! : I’m so in love with this beautiful and heartfelt story because it gave me a vivid snapshot of what Chinatown, San Francisco was really like and I felt as though I was experiencing every moment with Lily. I really wished this book was around when I was a teenager because I could totally relate to the tough choices Lily had to make. I’m anxiously awaiting this author’s next story because I can’t wait to see what she does next! ( Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Holly R. -- Powerful Tale : Malinda Lo is one of my favourite authors and I always anticipate her books coming out, but this novel hits on a different level. The story is poignant and powerful and I found the history very fascinating as someone who is neither Asian or American. It was eyeopening. I feel like Malinda has really honed her craft and it's demonstrated within this novel. Sad it's over so soon! Also Tommy *heart-eyes* ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 24, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kirstie -- I love love love this book : I will write a proper review at some point, but for now I just want to say how much I loved this novel. I appreciate that even though the story is fiction it is based upon very real attitudes and events that would have happened at the time. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 21, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Snoopy -- An interesting period piece : As someone who grew up in the nineties with the Cold War a distant memory reading anything set in the height of the Cold War is an odd experience. This is combined with a well written and engaging coming of age story, I purchased this on a whim not expecting much so was pleasantly surprised to find a fin and engaging work. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lucy -- Buy the book. Click add to cart. You want it. You know you do. : So gripping, and gives me the childlike butterflies I used to get as a kid. So much to learn from this book from Engineering to Chinese culture to LGBTQ+ to general American and Chinese history. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 18, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Izzy -- Fantastic : Wow. I am blown away by this book. I wasn’t expecting to feel so broken and torn by this story. It gave an incredible insight to queer communities in the 1950s and the experiences of lesbian Asian Americans during this period. It’s also very well written, despite being a little slow in parts, very detailed and is a heartfelt depiction of first love. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 17, 2021 )
